Nepal vision | 16/03/2026
The Middle East has been engaged in a three-way war between the United States, Israel and Iran, in the current scenario. This war is essential in creating awareness of the travellers whose interests are the impact of this war on their ability to access Nepal. It is these tensions that are dramatic and dominate the international headlines, but are geographically distant and do not directly threaten the safety of trekking in Nepal.
The overall nature of the current crisis in the Middle East is the accumulating military tensions between Israel and Iran, and the United States has been playing a major role in supporting Israel. It is a decades-old rivalry. But it has been more noticeable of late years. These tensions have led to a volatile situation in the Middle East region, temporarily affecting the airline business, particularly through the major hub airports in the Persian Gulf.
What should be understood, however, is that this war, despite the fact that it has a devastating impact on the Middle East region, has little or no impact on Nepal and its safety or security. Nepal is kilometres away from the warring regions. The country has neutral diplomatic relationships with all the parties. The trekking facilities are fully operational and safe for foreign tourists despite the political events in other areas.
The recent conflict between Iran, Israel and the US is a result of decades of tensions between the countries due to the Iranian nuclear program. Iran has had years of enhancing its nuclear capabilities. Iran is considered to be an existential threat to the United States and Israel because it is equipped with nuclear arms.
The negotiation process did not save the nuclear development. The attempts of the Trump administration to work out the deal in early 2025 were confirmed by the letter to the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei with a 60-day deadline to find a nuclear agreement, but the negotiations in Geneva ended without improvements.
The United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury on February 28, 2026. It was a large-scale preemptive military operation comprising about 900 attacks on Iranian targets. The attacks were made against missile installations, air defense installations, infrastructure and command structures. This was planned to stop the nuclear programme of Iran as well as its missile capabilities before Iran could advance to the stage of having operational nuclear weapons.
The situation of the immediate aftermath was disastrous. The Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei of Iran had been assassinated in the attacks. The Easy Peasy government of Iran was decapitated. Iran retaliated instantly with its own counterattacks. Iran launched drones and missiles at Israel, US bases in the region, including those in Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Kuwait.
The military base in Cyprus of the UK was even attacked by the Iranian troops. Most importantly, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz among the most important shipping routes in the world involving oil transportation.
The war had extended to the original US-Israel-Iran trade. Hezbollah, an armed organization of Lebanon supported and guided by Iran, got involved in the war against Israel. The war was no longer being waged between the three major parties. But it had initiated proxy armies in the region.
The world economy has been harshly upset. When the Strait of Hormuz was closed, it opened one of the most important shipping routes in the world. This strait receives approximately 30% of the oil going through the world on a daily basis. By closing it, the world's oil reserves are seriously disrupted. The International Energy Agency declared 400 million barrels of oil reserves to harmonise the markets. The Hormuz Strait has brought the global trade to a standstill, with ships halting the movement.
Regardless of how serious the US-Israel-Iran war is, Nepal is not in any way touched and remains free and untouched for international trekking. To understand the reasons behind this, it is important to look at geography, the political location of Nepal, and the real effects the conflict has on various territories.
Geographically, Nepal is located in South Asia in the Himalayan Mountains, approximately 3,000 km away from the nearest points of conflict. The conflict is centered in the Middle East, involving Iran, Israel, and various locations in the Arabian Peninsula and Persian Gulf. Nepal is in a completely different geographic region. Military action in Iran, Israel, or the Persian Gulf has no physical impact whatsoever on Nepal's territory, airspace, population, or infrastructure.
To get an idea of the distance, consider London to Egypt or New York to Mexico. That is the distance between Nepal and the Middle East combat regions. Even a massive crusade such as Operation Epic Fury has zero geographic effect on Nepal. There is neither a threat of any military action extending to Nepal nor a direct impact on the country.
Politically, Nepal remains neutral. The Nepali government has not taken sides in the US-Israel-Iran conflict. Nepal maintains diplomatic relationships with the United States, Iran, Israel, and all other countries. The country's constitution explicitly commits Nepal to neutrality in international disputes. The government does not favor any particular side in international conflicts.
Moreover, international tourism has been a major economic activity in Nepal. The government actively promotes tourism as a development strategy and works hard to ensure all international visitors feel safe and welcome. The government has no interest in anything that would discourage tourism. Even if some tourists avoid travel due to geopolitical concerns, Nepal would not create problems for those who do come.
The shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz happens to be one of the significant consequences of the future US-Israel-Iran war. This shutdown has a big impact on the world oil markets, but has no substantial impact on traveling to Nepal.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the sensitive shipping routes between Iran and Oman that links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. World oil supplies were greatly upset when Iran blocked them in response to Operation Epic Fury. Oil prices spiked upward. To balance markets, the International Energy Agency released 400 million barrels of oil reserves.
The effect of this oil crisis on the operations of airlines is indirect. The cost of operation of the airlines is high due to the higher prices of fuel. It may result in an increase in ticket prices as well as some flight cancellations or route diversions. Nevertheless, over the decades, airlines have demonstrated that they are able to adjust to supply disruptions.
Airlines maintained modified routes and increased costs even in the 1970s, in the middle of the oil embargo. In the case of the Iraq war in 2003, supply was lost, which was followed by the adaptation of airlines. Airlines will go on with the prevailing crisis; however, tickets might be expensive.
To the tourists who are going to Nepal, the increased cost of the tickets is not a threat to travelling but a burden. An increase in oil prices does not affect flights and accessibility to Nepal. It will increase the cost of the tickets, and individuals will still be able to reserve and fly. The increased price of the ticket will lead to the decision of many travelers that the Nepal adventure is worth it.
Furthermore, Nepal does not rely on Middle Eastern oil for anything pertaining to trekking. Teahouses do not need oil to run. Guides do not require fuel to perform high-altitude trekking. Moving horses and porters transport supplies devoid of fuel. The fuel aspect is the only factor that affects aeroplane tickets reaching Nepal, still possible albeit costly.
Some of the airport operations in the Middle East have been affected by the 2026 conflict, but alternative routes make Nepal still reachable. The US and Israel attacked military installations, air defence, and infrastructure in Iran. This has some of the attacks around or at the Iranian airports. Certain Iranian airports can be destroyed or have a low capacity.
But the key Middle Eastern hubs that meet the Nepal-bound travellers have the airports located in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other countries that are not as directly involved in the active conflict regions. Dubai International Airport, Doha International Airport in the UAE and other major hubs are still operational.
Although there may be some disruption in some of the Middle East airports temporarily, there are other alternatives that are fully operational and in place. The Changi Airport in Singapore, the Bangkok International Airport in Thailand and the Delhi International Airport in India are totally out of the Middle East conflict. These airports have not been part of the US-Israel-Iran war. They work in normal operation and are connected to Kathmandu.
Alternative routing via Bangkok, Delhi, or Singapore is also effective for passengers with fears of the disrupted activities in the Middle East hub. In fact, these are the routes that have gained even greater popularity due to the fact that it does not touch the Middle East at all. These routes are also popular routes among many experienced travelers since they are more reliable in times when tensions are experienced in the Middle East.
By mid-March 2026, there will still be international flights carried out worldwide, even amid the ongoing US-Israel-Iran war. Global aviation has not been shut down by the war. Airlines continue flying. Airports do not shut down. Flight services to Nepal are still being done in major international airports all over the world.
There is a possibility of some flights being diverted to bypass the airspace above war-torn countries. There might have been slight delays with some flights. The cost of tickets could be inflated as a result of fuel taxes. However, flights go on. The citizens keep traveling abroad. The international air travel system has become accustomed to war, just like it has become accustomed to all the past geopolitical crises.
Airlines that do flights to Nepal from major hubs are carrying on with their usual schedules. Thai Airways is still flying between Kathmandu and Bangkok. Air India keeps operating another Delhi- Kathmandu flight. Nepal Airlines is still flying across countries. Schedules are followed by other carriers. Citizens will be able to make bookings and fly to Nepal, though at higher prices than they were during the pre-conflict era.

The trekking industry in Nepal has evolved over the past 50 years of international trekking tourism. This rich history has led to advanced safety mechanisms, professional guide networks and well-developed infrastructure, all of which run smoothly irrespective of politics in the global arena.
There is a need to train and license the professional guide system in Nepal. Guides are expected to write exams and get certifications. Training is done on the recognition of altitude sickness, first aid, emergency, language and cultural knowledge. Guides are supposed to have emergency communication gadgets and understand how to evacuate people.
Teahouse networks are constituted by thousands of small lodges placed strategically along the trails on the major trekking routes. They are mostly family companies run by the locals who have years of experience in trekking. The owners of many teahouses have been serving in the trekking business all their lives and are able to know the issues and cope with the situation.
There is the presence of rescue and emergency services in the trekking areas in Nepal. In case of a serious medical emergency, there are helicopter evacuation services. Thousands of evacuations have been carried out successfully because of these services over the years. Kathmandu and other large towns that have medical facilities are able to provide medical services in case of emergency cases, as a result of trekking, such as altitude sickness, injuries and other related illnesses.
The Nepal Tourism Board has official records of trekking company licenses, guides and accommodations. Such registries enable the government to implement safety standards and regulations. Any company that has been found to be operating in illegal conditions or those that have low safety standards can be closed or stopped.
Nepal trekking is safe, as evidenced by statistics. Nepal receives about 1.2 million foreigners every year. Trekking constitutes approximately 15-20 % of this tourism; thus, approximately 180, 000 to 240,000 individuals trek in Nepal every year. The incidences among these hundreds of thousands of trekkers are extremely rare. Trekking-related emergencies are mostly mild cases of altitude sickness, which can be treated through descent.
Nepal has always been ranked by international travel safety organizations as a safe place to trek. The Indian trekking insurance companies are competitive regarding the Nepal trekking rates, and this implies low perceived risk.
Nepal trekking in spring 2026 is an ideal time to go to Nepal due to various reasons. The months of March, April and May are clear, predictable, warm in temperature and have grandiose views. There are wildflowers that grow in the elevation areas and form colorful sceneries.
Other than weather benefits, there might be fewer trekkers than in the usual spring season in 2026. Geopolitical factors may cause visitors to avoid international travel, though. Among the Nepalese trekkers, this brings about never-before benefits. You have the best weather with less traffic, lower prices than the regular spring seasons, more space to stay, and more serene mountain experiences with fewer people on the trails.
In case the US-Israel-Iran war causes fear among international tourists, Nepal trekking would literally become more appealing and pleasant in spring 2026. The same unrest that other places may cut down crowds enhances the Nepal trekking adventure by decreasing competition for available resources and tranquil trails.
To wrap up, the bottom line is clear. US-Israel-Iran tensions create temporary challenges with Middle East airline hub operations, but they don't threaten Nepal trekking safety or accessibility. By choosing alternative routing through Bangkok, Delhi, or Singapore, you can avoid any potential disruptions. These routes are reliable, well-established, and actually preferred by many experienced travelers.
Once you reach Nepal, the trekking experience is completely separate from global politics. The infrastructure is solid. The guides are experienced and professional. The mountains are magnificent. Thousands of trekkers safely complete Nepal treks every year, regardless of international political situations.
Spring 2026 presents an exceptional opportunity. You get optimal weather combined with fewer crowds and better pricing. If you've been considering Nepal, spring 2026 might be your ideal window.
