Pre-Travel Guidance: Your Journey Begins Before You Even Land

Preparing for your trip to Nepal can make your medical journey smooth and stress-free. A little preparation helps you feel confident, organized, and ready to focus entirely on your treatment upon arrival.

Prepare Your Medical Documents

Begin by gathering all essential medical documents. These help doctors in Nepal understand your health and create the best treatment plan for you. Make sure to have:

  • Medical History: Past illnesses, surgeries, hospital stays, and chronic conditions. Include immunizations and key diagnoses.
  • Recent Test Results: Lab reports, X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, or any relevant diagnostics. English copies are best.
  • Prescriptions: All medicines you take, including dosage and frequency, plus any supplements.
  • Doctor’s Letters: Notes or referrals from your local doctors explaining your condition and treatment needs.
  • Allergy Information: Please list any allergies, particularly to medications or food.
  • Doctor Contacts: Keep contact info of your home-country doctors in case Nepali doctors need more information.

Tip: Scan and save digital copies so you can easily share them with the clinic and maintain backups for yourself.

Talk to Your Doctor

Before you travel, discuss your plans with your doctor to stay safe and prepared:

  • Share Your Travel Plans: Inform your doctor about your travel plans, including the destination, the hospital you’ll visit, and your planned procedure.
  • Check Medications: Adjust doses as needed, especially for chronic conditions such as diabetes or blood thinners.
  • Vaccinations: Ensure you have received recommended vaccines, such as Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, or routine immunizations.
  • Special Needs: Arrange assistance for flights or mobility issues. Your doctor can provide certificates if required.
  • Insurance and Emergencies: Verify your travel and health insurance coverage, and be prepared for what to do in the event of an emergency.

Visa and Health Precautions

Getting your visa and health requirements ready ensures a hassle-free arrival in Nepal:

  • Visa: Most medical tourists use a tourist visa. You can obtain it upon arrival at Tribhuvan Airport or apply online, if available.

    • You’ll need a passport valid for at least 6 months, photos, visa fees, and a medical appointment letter (recommended).

  • Health Precautions: Visit a travel clinic for recommended vaccines and health checks. These may include:

    • Typhoid and Hepatitis A/B
    • Routine vaccines like Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Measles
    • Malaria prevention when visiting certain areas

  • Medical Supplies: Please bring your medications in their original packaging, along with the prescriptions. Carry enough for your entire trip, as some may not be available in Nepal.

Quick Pre-Travel Checklist

  • Collect and organize medical documents.
  • Consult with your doctor about medications, vaccines, and health precautions.
  • Prepare visa documents and applications.
  • Pack medicines and necessary supplies with prescriptions.
  • Confirm appointments and special instructions with your Nepali clinic.

Tips for Medical Tourists Visiting Nepal

  • Please bring your previous medical records and any relevant prescriptions that you may have.
  • Inform the doctor about any allergies or ongoing treatments.
  • Allow at least 1–2 extra days for recovery after the procedure before flying.
  • Choose comfortable accommodation for post-treatment rest.

Cultural Experiences in Nepal: Healing Beyond Medicine

Nepal is not only a destination for medical care, but it is also a country where culture, tradition, and nature converge to offer a unique healing experience. When you leave your treatment, consider the local culture to help revive your mind and soul.

Visit the Local vibrant markets.

Take a walk around the vibrant small markets, filled with their vibrant colors, enticing smells, and lively sounds. Freshly ground spices, locally made souvenirs, all this and more await you in the markets, which are a treat to your senses and a well-rounded means of juggling all those recovery-cramps!

See Tranquil Temples

Visit the peaceful temple courts to experience Nepal's spiritual side. Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) or Patan Durbar Square are great places to be more contemplative in ancient architectural settings and experience centuries-old rituals.

Taste Traditional Teas and Local Flavours

Take a detour to enjoy a traditional herbal tea and savor local specialties. Such simple experiences provide relaxation and comfort, allowing your mind some time to rest and recharge.

Long and Short Treks, Scenic walks.

Soothing walks or nature treks provide a way to bond with Nepal's experiences. Nagarkot offers panoramic Himalayan scenes, and Bhaktapur allows you to stroll through its cobblestone streets, enjoying the past in a leisurely manner.

Yoga and Meditation in the morning

Wake up to yoga or meditation in peaceful surroundings, or with a view of the sunrise. These practices are beneficial in calming the mind, reducing stress, and facilitating physical healing.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Landing in the Valley

All Kathmandu strikes you at once - the honk of motorbikes, the swirl of incense, the pinch of people in alleys that seem to have always been there. Someone is waiting in the airport with a sign and smiling at Nepal Vision. You are ferried to a four-star hotel and there is hot tea and a cosy bed awaiting you. Dinner is Nepali cuisine in its authentic four-course format: steaming momos, dal bhat with lentils, spiced vegetables - the sort of food that tastes both simple and festive. During the meal, you are given a preview of what is to happen during the week.

Day 2 - The First Check-In

Instead of temples, the morning starts with medicine. You get taken to another clinic where a partner doctor listens attentively, asks appropriate questions and does tests according to your requirements, be it a dental check-up, a skin treatment or a complete body check-up. The practice is comprehensive but not in a hurry.

By afternoon, the pace slows. As long as you feel like it, you can take a little guided tour around Kathmandu Durbar Square, where pigeons spin around courtyards of palaces and wooden carved windows tell centuries of tales. It is the type of history that you not only see but also feel under your feet.

Day 3 - In the Chair

This is treatment day. Perhaps you are sitting in a dentist's waiting room, perhaps you are undergoing skin treatment, perhaps it is blood tests and x-rays. In any case, the morning is about letting the professionals do their job and doing yours: resting.

You can go wandering through Thamel in the evening, when you feel well enough. It is loud and vibrant, the type of store where you can purchase a yak-wool scarf in one store and a cup of ginger tea in another. Or you can simply remain in your hotel room and listen to the city humming through your balcony. Both are perfectly fine.

Day 4 - Healing the Mind and Body

The rhythm shifts today. A yoga/meditation session also previews the atmosphere, not as a tourist gimmick, but as an invitation to breathe in. Then back out into the city, this time to Swayambhunath, where monkeys race up and down the steps of the temples and prayer flags fly in every direction.

Afternoon ushers in Patan Durbar Square, which is smaller and more sedate than Kathmandu, but no less spell-bounding. The hissing of everyday life, the mute courtyards, and the bronze statues all create a soft backdrop to a body that is still in the process of healing.

Day 5 - A Breath of Fresh Air

At this point, you have had ample time to relax and recuperate, and hence, the itinerary expands. A motor drive leads to Bhaktapur, where all the bricks are museum bricks. Hands are blackened with labor, children are kicking balls in old-fashioned courtyards, aroma of fresh yogurt: the famous juju dhau of Bhaktapur is in the air.

Up there, it goes up to the hills past Nagarkot, where the air is thinner and the view goes on and on. The Himalayas run the length of the horizon on a clear day like a jagged crown and when fortune favors you, even Everest pops up.

Day 6 - The Final Check

It is follow-up time back in Kathmandu. Your physicians check in on your progress, adjust what requires adjustment, and present your reports. It has a kind of finality about it--a tidying up of medical strands.

The remainder of the day is your own business. Perhaps you are exploring Asan Bazaar, evading the porters carrying baskets of vegetables, glancing at rows of spices, which form small pyramids. Perhaps you are in Thamel, haggling half-heartedly over a handicraft that you neither need nor will ever buy, but that you will take back home.

Dinner the same night is a farewell. Perhaps it is on a roof with the city spread below you and the lights flickering like fireflies in the dark.

Day 7 - Leaving, But Not Empty-Handed

The last morning is quiet. Slow breakfast, a little time spent packing, one final glance at the mess outside your hotel window. Then we fly back to the airport, where you are checked in and ready to go by the Nepal Vision team.

There is medical care you leave behind, but there are memories, too: of Kathmandu, with its bustling streets, of cold temple courtyards, of the mountain air in Nagarkot. Yes, health and healing--but also stories.
