| (26 Nights/
27 Days)
Enter the lowest valley in the world to begin your journey to the base of Mt.
Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world (8,481m). But first you will have
the opportunity to visit cloud-forest jungle, high alpine terrain, orchids and
rural farm and market villages. From there, you will follow the ridge above the
Arun River, proposed site for the largest hydroelectric plant in Nepal. Pass through
yak pastures towards the endless ice fields of Mt. Makalu, Baruntse and Sherpani
col. View the Kanchenjunga massif, Everest, Lhotse, Baruntse and Chamlang as well
as the rarely seen Kangshung face of Everest. Return through isolated Sherpa villages,
then on the main Everest trekking trail to Lukla for your picturesque return flight
below the Nepalese Himalaya.
The trek starts from Arun Valley following the rural areas, through fascinating
medieval traditional markets and farm villages, this walk-in follows picturesque
and rarely trekked route, offering views of Mt. Makalu and Kanchenjunga all
the way, more stunning views of the Mt. Khumbakarna Range as you enter the Barun
valley of Makalu basin. From here, the trek passes over the yak pastures beneath
the Makalu's towering south face along with the great view of the rare east
(Kanshung) face of Mt. Everest.
This challenging trek is a mountaineering traverse from Makulu to Everest region.
We start this trek at Tumlingtar in the Arun valley, from here we spend a varied
eight days, trekking in to the base camp of Makalu at Sherson, on the high yak
pasture beneath the towering Mt. Makalu the 5th highest mountain in the world.
This walk-in follows a picturesque and rarely trekked route, which passes through
a number of interesting settlements and offers tantalizing views of the highest
peak of this planet earth. On this trek we have allowed a couple of days for
acclimatization at Sherson and beyond in the laps of these giant peaks. From
here we move to a higher camp at the foot of the Barun Glacier, here we make
our final preparation for the traverse of the three cols.
Ropes will be fixed on the steepest and most exposed sections of each of the
passes, to safe guard the passage of the group, from this high route a spectacular
view of most of the high peaks of the central eastern Himalaya, including Mt.
Everest, Lhotse from the south east. As a relaxing final to this outstanding
trek, after passing the last pass of Amphu Labtsa we descend towards the popular
Everest trail, through the Khumbu area to Lukla for the flight back to Kathmandu.
A day on
Makalu, West Col & Sherpani Col Traverse Trek
At 6 am your Sherpa will come to your tent with a chirpy good morning, followed shortly by a basin of hot water to wash in. Then it's time to order breakfast, pack up your kit and head off to trek for the next three hours through forests, hills, mountains and local villages. You'll stop for an hour at a particularly pleasant spot along the way for a well-earned hot lunch. Then you'll then walk another three hours or so, before you stop for the night. Then you can have tea or coffee and some light snacks, before exploring the area with trek leader or just relaxing until dinner is served in a tented dining hall. The evenings are spent reading or chatting with your fellow trekkers and crew about the trip so far(s). A pack of cards is an asset on these nights; the crew love teaching various Nepali card games and learning new Western games. Finally, it's off to bed for a well deserved night's rest before you start it all again.
