Useful information before joining this trip

Country information

Nepal has abundance of offers to establish it as a round the year travel destination. Based on this fact, many international tourists are indeed incorporating Nepal in their wishful travel itinerary. Nepal is known for its beautiful and dramatic scenery. Avid walkers and non-walkers alike are drawn to its mountains and foothills to view the Himalaya and the world's highest peaks. Many also discover the beauty of the forests and the enjoyment of time spent as a self-contained expedition, far from the rush of the modern world and in the delightful company of the trek crew as they tend to our needs and ensure that we are comfortable and able to enjoy the trek to the fullest. They are physically strong, sharp-witted and have an incredibly positive attitude towards a life that we would consider extremely tough. There is something about a trek in the Himalaya that draws you back time and time again. For keen walkers it is a paradise and even avowed non-walkers find that one foot just seems to follow the other, drawn by the appeal of what lies beyond. Nepal's population of around 20 million people is a blend of Hindu, Buddhism and animist religion. Nepal is a mosaic of cultures, ethnic groups and languages. It is remarkable that in a country of this size there are over 100 different ethnic groups, with at least as many languages. More than three million people live in the Kathmandu Valley, but at least ninety percent of the population lives in the rural areas of the lower and middle hills of the Himalayan Range. Nepal is predominantly a simple rural society and a trek in the foothills of the Himalaya is a strong cultural experience as we spend time with our crew and meet local village people.

Nepal has been proclaimed a "Federal Republic State" to be known as the "Democratic Republic of Nepal" On the 28th May 2008. This historic development followed the first elections held since 1999 after a ceasefire agreement between the government and the Maoists was signed in November 2006, putting an end to 10 years of instability in the Kingdom. The announcement of the abolishment of the Monarchy also brought an end to 240 years of Royal rule in the country. Today the general feeling amongst Nepalese is a positive one, and many believe that Nepal is now finally moving forward with a new identity as a democratic nation and a fresh outlook.

In our tour group the minimum number will be 2 persons and the maximum number will be 10 persons. All foreigners require a visa for entry into Nepal (except Indian nationals). It is your responsibility to obtain the entry visa. You can get from a Nepalese embassy overseas or on arrival in Nepal. Most people will obtain their visa on arrival to Kathmandu airport. You will need one passport photo and the following fees dependent upon the duration of the multiple entry visa:

In Nepal you will require a visa which can be obtained in advance from the Nepalese Embassy from your country or you can get on arrival at the airport in Kathmandu.

• Multiple entry 15 days US$ 25 or equivalent convertible currency. • Multiple entry 30 days US$ 40 or equivalent convertible currency. • Multiple entry 90 days US$ 100 or equivalent convertible currency.

You will require visa fee in cash (this is payable in any major currency but NOT travelers cheques) and 2 passport photos to purchase a Nepal visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or at the Nepal entry point.

If you plan to obtain your visa in your country, you can download the application form from the website at: www.immi.gov.np

Please note regulations and costs do change frequently so it is advisable to check the current rules with your nearest Nepalese embassy or consulate.

Peoples and Culture

Nepal has a population of more than 26 million people, made up of over 40 different races and tribes. The country offers such diversity that the visitor may experience any lifestyle from the Stone Age, in far west and high hills, to the jet age of Kathmandu.

The two major groups in Nepalese society are Tibeto-Burman or Mongoloids from the north and Indo-Aryans from the south. Many customs are inherited from both sides and have been developed by the influences of the land, climate and available resources.

Religion

Nepal biggest religion is Hinduism but equal respect is given to other religions as well. Buddhism is the second largest religion followed in Nepal; others are Tantrism, Jain, Islam and Christianity.

Climate and Weather

The climate of Nepal is as varied as its geography. The low-lying Terai has a sub-tropical monsoonal climate. The Himalayan foothills, where most of our treks take place, are best in the cool dry season from September to May. The traditional tour/trekking season in Nepal is late September to May, March to May & Sep to Nov generally recognized as having the best weather. These are the typical months with great weather. The visibility is perfect, days are pleasantly warm, although nights can be cold, and snow is possible above 3,000 meters.

Travel Insurance

To be adequately protected in terms of insurance, you will need specialist travel insurance for participation in the hazardous activities. A travel insurance policy that covers cancellation, injury, death, lost baggage, theft, liability, medical treatment and expenses is strongly recommended. Make sure the insurance covers all the activities that you will be undertaking during your stay in Nepal such as trekking and climbing. If a client becomes ill, all hospital expenses, doctors' fees and repatriation costs are the client's responsibility.

Vaccination for Nepal Travelling

Vaccination is most important while travelling as to prevent you from the possible diseases. For traveling to Nepal; we recommend you to take a vaccination of Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis A etc. However it is not really a must to have but it is recommended.
